Local Tennis Coach, Phil Gonzales, honored at Hamilton High
In a ceremony on Wednesday, November 23, the tennis facility at Chandler’s Hamilton High School was officially named the “Phil Gonzales Tennis Complex.” In his years as coach at Hamilton, Phil’s teams had consistent success, achieving sectionals numerous times and reaching state finals twice. The number of former players who attended the ceremony and their obvious affection for their coach was a true tribute to Phil’s ideals of teaching with love, respect, and having fun! Phil was also named to the Chandler Sports Hall of Fame in 2021.
Phil’s wife and biggest supporter, Karen, shown in photo, is a long-time member of IronOaks Tennis Club. Congratulations to you both!
On Saturday, November 19, IronOaks Tennis Club hosted Trilogy Tennis Club in a friendly social competition.
Seventy players competed in both gender and mixed doubles. Thanks to Lori Wold and her VOS team
“The Insiders” for providing the great decorations and delicious lunch, and to Vivian and Norb Guimond
for organizing play.

A few raindrops were not enough to dampen the spirits of the IronOaks
Tennis Club members who gathered on Saturday, July 2, for the annual,
traditional pancake breakfast to celebrate Independence Day. Over 50 IOTC
members started the morning with some friendly social tennis followed by a
delicious breakfast of pancakes, sausage, fruit, and mimosas. Thanks to the
breakfast crew, pictured here, for hosting this tasty event, and to Norb and
Vivian Guimond for organizing the tennis play.
The “Breakfast Crew”: Judy Gahide, Kathy Klotz, Riki Sadosky, Carol Mellinger, Betty Sanders,
Dottie Devereaux, and Molly Bergesen.
Almost seventy members gathered to send off the “snowbirds” and celebrate the end of a good season
on the tennis courts. Some members braved the heat to play tennis, and many others joined for a
chance to socialize, enjoy an evening meal, and vie for door prizes donated by BlueStar,
Stone and Barrel, and Tennis Cabana. Thanks to the IOTC board and the many volunteers who worked
hard to make this a successful season, and special thanks to the committee who organized this event:
Rita Tanen, Lita Swanson, Carole Rockland, Beth Zdeblick, Chuck Sanders, Rosalie Azzaro, Joe Azzaro,
and Edith Tanniru.
IronOaks, Cottonwood/Palo Verde, Sun Lakes Country Club, Springfield, and Sunbird joined together
for the 1st Annual Grand Slam Charity Event raising over $6,000 for

Young Realty, A-1 Golf Carts and BlueStar gave generous donations, together with many of our
tennis members and homeowners.
